RENICK, W.Va. (WCHS) — Will Fanning and his wife Jill ran the popular Brazenhead Inn near Snowshoe resort for many years. In 2022, the couple sold the business and looked to retire comfortably in a Victorian home they had been renovating in nearby Valley Head.

However, they soon discovered they were spending a lot of time driving to and from Lewisburg to visit their grandchildren. That’s when they began searching for a more convenient location to retire.

Eventually they became aware of and bought the Friendly Goat and Fruit Farm in Renick in March of 2024, much closer to their beloved grand kids.

The farm is beautiful but takes a lot of year-round work to operate and maintain a working fruit farm, not to mention those goats.

“We bought a blueberry farm with over four thousand plants,” Fanning said as we escaped the blazing sun under a large tent. “The crop this year is just amazing, I’ve never seen so many blue berries in my life.”

Indeed, the plants are literally loaded with blueberries ripe for picking.

Fortunately, visitors can take advantage of this year's bumper crop. Friendly Goat Fruit Farm is a U-pick farm with affordable prices.

“You can pick as many as you want here,” Fanning explained. “When people come out and pick a gallon, we only charge them $10. If you bought a gallon of berries in the store, you’d probably have to give them your first-born child.”

Friendly Goat Fruit Farm also offers raspberries and blackberries.

Those previously mentioned goats are just an added bonus here, providing guests, especially children, an opportunity to pet and feed the friendly critters.

“I was raised in Ireland where my family had livestock, so we really enjoy having them here. Children just love them.” Fanning said.

The blueberry season only lasts through the first week of August.
